The beginning of the museum is set in the very distant year of 1917 by the great ethnographer and research worker of the Rhodope Mountains Stoyu Shishkov. Nevertheless, it was constructed specially and established as a Regional Museum in 1952.

The house is emblematic for the cultural life of Plovdiv. Theatre plays, concerts, exhibitions, literature performances, meetings with the most expressed authors are organized there.

This remarkable house of the Bulgarian National Revival was built up in 1863, completely in the style of the European classicism. But, not without reason, some of the foreign researchers compare the building to an Italian Palazzo from the Renaissance.
